Project title: European Chemistry Thematic Network

Coordinating institution: Ecole Superieure de Chimie Physique Electronique de Lyon

Dates: 1 October 2002 – 30 September 2004 (ECTN2), 1 October 2003 – 30 September 2004 (ECTN3), 1 October 2006 – 30 September 2009 (ECTN4)

Participant countries:
See respective lists for ECTN2ECTN3 and ECTN4; as well as here

Subject area(s): Chemistry; Chemical Engineering

Project objectives:
ECTN2
: A principal aim of this project was to analyse and make recommendations concerning the content of core and specialized educational programmes in chemistry, and assess and disseminate information concerning innovative teaching and assessment methods. Another aim of the project was to promote the science and study of chemistry to enhance the recruitment of qualified students in this area.

ECTN3: two main general objectives: (i) to provide tools and support to Higher Education Institutions during the significant changes implemented through the Bologna process; (ii) to provide Europe with a larger labor pool of talented chemists.

ECTN4: to bring together all actors in the chemistry sector and enhance the employability of chemistry graduates at all levels; particularly at the first cycle level; to enhance the professional/generic skills of doctoral level students; to report about and evaluate innovative teaching methods; to develop a European qualifications framework for the chemistry sector; to identify best practices in the creation of study programmes combining chemistry and chemical technology; to create an Internet based test in biological chemistry; to develop links with other networks, such as a joint summer school programme consisting of scientists and technicians; including a chemistry research network; to enhance the value of previous Leonardo and Socrates projects involving chemistry; to continue full participation as a core subject area in the Tuning project; and to enhance the public image of chemistry.
